Suicide And Adolescents
• Most adolescent suicides occur
  after school hours and in the teen’s home.
• The typical profile of an adolescent
  nonfatal suicide attempter is a female who ingests pills.
• The typical profile of a completer
  suicide is a male who dies from a gunshot wound.


Suicide and Depression
• Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
  is the psychiatric diagnosis most commonly associated with completed suicide.
• Lifetime risk of suicide among
  patients with untreated MDD is nearly 20%.
• About 2/3 of people who complete
  suicide are depressed at the time of their death.
• About 7 in every 100 men and 1 in
  every 100 women who have been diagnosed with depression at some time in their lives will go on to complete suicide.

Completion of suicide prevention training is required by all Henrico County Public Schools employees every two years. Quizzes will verify understanding of the material, and your name and score will be recorded for verification.

At the end of this training, participants will understand some warning signs and risk factors of suicide, and also what school personnel can do to help.

Why Is This Training Required?
This is because suicide is the third leading cause of death for Caucasian Americans ages 10-19, and it is the fifth leading cause of death for African Americans aged 10-14. The more you know about suicide in young people, the more you can help.
