    When Theodore Roosevelt the 26th president of the United States took office in 1901 the trip from San Francisco

California to Boston Massachusetts was over 13000 miles by sea.  Roosevelt intent upon shortening that trip around about

5000 miles wanted to build a canal across Panama.  The canal would benefit communication trade and defense but

building it proved quiet difficult.  There were engineering challenges bad weather and alot of mosquitoes that carried yellow

fever.  Panama and the United States agreed to the project in November 1903 and finally to everyones relief the canal was
