1. How and why do each of the following men contribute to the
unjust imprisonment of Edmond Dantes at the Chateau d'If:
Danglars, Mondego, and Villefort.
2. Explain the reasons for Dantes' gratitude to Faria and Morrel.
3. After his escape from prison, Dantes adopts three major
diguises. Explain his purpose for each disguise.
4. Give examples of other characters who alter their identities
and explain the reasons for their deceptions.
5. Despite Dantes' tragic past, he treasures some of his memories.
Demonstrate Dantes' sentimental attachment to figures in
his past by discussing his emotional responses to certain
objects.
6. Demonstrate how Dantes uses the weaknesses and the secret
sins of his enemies to defeat them.
7. Ironically, after Dantes inherits a great deal of money,
he is kind to people who do not deserve kindness. Give examples
of some of these people and why Dantes helps them.
8. Poetic justice takes place when the good characters are
rewarded and the evil characters are punished. Determine whether
or not poetic justice occurs in the novel by discussing the
fates of the major characters.
9. Four of the main characters lose their will to live and
place themselves at the mercy of others. Identify these characters
and give the reasons for their despair and their eventual
salvation.
10. Trace the theme of betrayal throughout the novel.
