Primary Students

Kindergarten and 1st grade students visit the library weekly to enjoy a story time, engage in literature based activities, and check out books.  By the 2nd grade, students are encouraged to come to the library whenever they need a book to read or have an information need; they also meet, in their classes, with the library staff for beginning research activities, to enjoy stories, and to further their knowledge of literature using many book related projects and stations. 

For the primary grades, the library staff and program:

    ...highlight the best of good books

    ...introduce oral storytelling

    ...share nursery rhymes, traditional folk and fairy tales, and award winning books

    ...review library manners, book selection strategies, and basic research and reference materials

    ...define story elements and literary genres

Intermediate Students

Students in grades 3-5 are encouraged to come to the library whenever they need a book to read or have an information need; they also meet, in their classes, with the library staff for reference review, reader incentive programs, and research activities and strategies.

For the intermediate grades, the library staff and program:

    ...highlight the best of good books, focusing on literary genre studies

    ...share folk literature from countries around the world

    ...introduce the Super3 and Big6 Research Methods

    ...review library manners, book selection strategies, and basic research and reference materials

    ...explore nonfiction for recreational reading purposes

    ...conduct Reader incentive programs such as the Reading Patch Club, Book Celebration, and Book Bowl
