HOURS OF OPERATION

7:30 am - 2:00 pm
If you need access to the library after school hours, it is best to contact the school first --  to insure that the librarian and facilities are available at that time.

COLLECTION

The Maybeury Library has a collection of over 13,000 items.  We are constantly adding to our collection.  We happily accept suggestions if you know of a book or item that ought to be added to our collection.  Maybeury, along with all other Henrico County schools, participates in an  Interlibrary Loan system.  This allows us to borrow items from all other Henrico schools - which gives us access to nearly 750,000 items!
We occasionally accept donations for the library.  However, materials are placed in our collection only if they are deemed appropriate or necessary.
We often use donations for reading prizes, and we greatly appreciate your contributions! The majority of our materials are purchased from preferred library vendors which manufacture books with special library bindings. Books from Barnes & Noble or other retail outlets do not sell books with these preferred bindings. The types of items in our collection include:
  • Easy fiction (picture books)
  • Fiction (chapter books)
  • Nonfiction
  • Biographies/Autobiographies
  • Big Books
  • Books on tape (picture and chapter books)
  • Software
  • Videos/DVD's
  • Professional collection
  • Technology & Audio-visual equipment (computer peripherals, digital cameras, etc.)
TECHNOLOGY ACCESS

The library has seven iMacs for student use.  These computers are used primarily for search purposes (online catalog and research), but they can also be used to supplement technology activities from the classrooms.  All computers can be linked to the library's laser printer or a color printer.
Other technology resources available for checkout to the classrooms (teachers' use only) include:

  • LCD projector (ibeam)
  • Digital cameras
  • Video cameras
  • External hard drive
  • External CD burner
  • DVD burner
  • and MORE!
LIBRARY LESSONS/OPEN ACCESS

The Maybeury Library Media Center uses a flexible schedule in order for our students to make the best use of our facilities.  Students in grades K-2 have a scheduled library lesson each week.  These lessons focus on teaching students how to use the library, as well as literature, reference or technology skills. Teachers in grades 3-5 collaborate with the librarian to plan lessons that support the grade level curriculum in connection with literature, reference or technology skills.
We have an open access policy that allows individual students to come at all times of the day for book exchange, research, AR testing, or other media center needs.

CHECKOUT POLICIES

Grades K-2:    2 books
Grades 3-5:     3 items (books or magazines)

All student items are checked out for a one week period.  Student in grades 3-5 may check out magazines also, but not more than one magazine per checkout period.  Items may be renewed twice (for a total checkout period of 3 weeks.)  Students may request a longer checkout period, but requires the librarian's approval. Overdue notices are printed each Monday.  There are no fines for overdue books at the elementary level, but we appreciate your prompt return or renewal of library materials.  Students are not allowed to check out new materials until overdues are returned.
Parents may sign up for Maybeury library privileges at any time.  Please stop by the library to fill out a User Request Form. We have an extensive parent collection.  Parents may also use our library to find recommended books for the READ ALOUD VIRGINIA program.  The checkout period for parents is two weeks.  Sorry, due to the fact that we are a teaching library - we discourage you from bringing toddler siblings to the library during the school day.  It can be very distracting to our classes in the library.
Videos and professional materials are available for teachers only.  Teachers may check out items for a two week period, and may request a longer period based on need.

REPLACEMENT POLICY

We begin teaching students at the kindergarten level about book care and responsibility for library books.  These discussions continue at all grade levels.  We hope that it won't be necessary, but if a book is lost or damaged beyond repair - the following replacement fees apply:

          $16.00      Hardback books
            $5.00      Paperback books

We reserve the right to charge a higher fee for books on tape, videos or other items that are more costly to replace.
