WQAC - The
Maybeury Morning Show |
| We began broadcasting our morning
announcements via live television in February 2008. It has been
very exciting for our students to be involved with our morning TV
program. Our program includes important daily announcements, the
Pledge of Allegiance, a patriotic song, a weather report, lunch menu,
birthday announcements and special performances. During the
2008-2009 school year, we will use 5th grade students as our television
anchors and technical personnel, but each day the program will involve
many more Maybeury students for special announcements or
performances. If you'd like to see our program, just stop by the
school any day just before 8am. The program can be viewed in all
of our classrooms - as well as the office and library. |
Accelerated
Reader ![]() |
|
Accelerated
Reader (AR) is a reading incentive program for students in grades
1-5*. Students may take online tests based on books they have
read. (Note: Tests may
only be taken at school - and only during school hours.)
The tests are assigned point values which correspond to the length and
difficulty of the book. Students then earn points throughout the
year for the tests they take. The classroom teachers often offer
incentives within the classroom for AR achievement, but we have
school-wide AR assemblies at the mid-year point and at the end of the
year to recognize AR achievements at all grade levels.
. All of our AR books in the library are marked on the spine with an AR label. The Maybeury Library and the Tuckahoe Public Library have a hard-copy of the AR list. If you have additional questions about the AR program - please call the school and ask for Mrs. Utley. For an online list of AR titles - click the AR label. ![]() *KG students are eligible for the AR program, but the students must be independent readers in order to participate. |
Birthday
Book Club |
|
The
Birthday Book Club is a library fundraiser that allows
you
to purchase a book for the library in honor of your child's birthday --
or
1/2 birthday in the case of summer birthdays. Children are able
to choose a book from our large selection of new arrivals to the
library.
A special book plate will be placed in the front of the book in honor
of your child. Our Birthday Book Club members are recognized
during our morning announcements on the day of their birthday (or 1/2
birthday). Your child will be the
first to check out the specially chosen book. For more
information, call or
stop by the library at any time. |

All 5th graders are encouraged to participate in the Book Bowl
Program.
This is a county-wide program where teams of 5th graders read from a
list
of 30 books - and then compete in a game-show type competition against
teams from other schools within Henrico County. The Book Bowl
list is released in early May. Students are encouraged to read
over the summer. The team is selected in early October -- after careful
consideration of many factors: the student's score on the Book Bowl
test, AR scores, student's completion of summaries for the books read -
and enthusiasm for the program. A maximum of eight students
can be chosen for the team. After the team is chosen, coaching
and practices take place throughout October
and
November. The competition is held at a central location (outside
of school) in
early
December. For a copy of the current Book Bowl List, click
here.
Note: You don't have to be a member of the Book Bowl team to appreciate the wonderful books on the list. All 5th graders will be encouraged to read these wonderful and varied books. |
Book Celebration (4th grade students
only) |
|
Book Celebration is a
new reading enrichment program for 4th graders. Each year, the
students will be given a list of 21 books. Students interested in
participating should read as many of the 21 books as possible.
The list will be released each winter and students will have until
spring to read the books. A team will be chosen from the top 8-10
students. In late spring, we will hold our CELEBRATION
DAY. Joining us will be teams from Tuckahoe ES and
Pinchbeck ES. All the students will compete in a variety of games
throughout the day. The games will be centered around the 21
books. Do you love to read? Do you love games? Then
this program is just for you!

Virginia Readers' Choice (formerly
the Virginia Young Readers program) are books
selected yearly by the Virginia State Reading Association. The
VSRA selects 10 books each at the primary, elementary, middle and high
school levels. At Maybeury, we promote this program primarily
with 1st graders. The books are read during storytime in the library. In early spring, the students are
able to vote on their favorite among the 10 selections. The
state-wide winner is announced in early June.
