2010 Elementary Math Olympics Recap!

Here is your chance to build your students' problem solving skills by participating in a friendly competition with other elementary classrooms in the county!

So, who's eligible and how does it work?

Any third, fourth, or fifth grade class can compete in any or all of the Olympic events.

There are 17 different events, the first beginning on February 10.  For each event, a link provides related background information and videos.  Students will use the given information to solve an "Olympic Challenge".  They may work independently or in pairs.  Answers should be submitted to the teacher who will check for accuracy and determine the class score based on the percentage of correct answers (number of correct answers/total number of students). There will be deadlines for each of the events and teachers will be responsible for submitting their class score via a Google Document form. Results submitted after the deadline will not count as the medals will be posted after each event.

Gold, silver, and bronze medals will be awarded to the highest performing teams (classes) for each event. By the end of the Olympic Games, students will learn something about the Olympics and hopefully learn something about math! The medal count will be shown on the Medal links above for bragging rights.

Important Note:  Competing in every (or any) math competition is completely voluntary. A list of events with their corresponding dates can be found on the Schedule link above. Previewing the "Olympic Challenge" for an event will help you decide whether it is appropriate for your students.   Obviously, the more events you enter, the better chance you have of having the most medals overall!

Are you still up for the challenge? You will need to register your team by clicking on the Schedule link above and then you're good to go. Good luck in advance and have fun competing for the gold!
