Number, Number Sense, Computation and Estimation Measurement and Geometry Probability, Statistics, Patterns, Functions, and Algebra SOL Review Materials Frequently Asked Questions
*Items measuring these SOL will be completed without the use of a calculator. Number and Number Sense Focus: Proportional Reasoning The student will b)   determine scientific notation for numbers greater than zero; c)   compare and order fractions, decimals, percents, and numbers written in scientific notation. HCPS Course 2 Curriculum Guide
Essential Knowledge and Skills Write a number greater than 0 in scientific notation. Recognize a number greater than 0 in scientific notation. Compare and determine equivalent relationships between numbers larger than 0 written in scientific notation. Represent a number in fraction, decimal, and percent forms. Compare, order, and determine equivalent relationships among fractions, decimals, and percents. Decimals are limited to the thousandths place, and percents are limited to the tenths place. Ordering is limited to no more than 4 numbers. Order no more than 3 numbers greater than 0 written in scientific notation. Essential Understandings When should scientific notation be used? Scientific notation should be used whenever the situation calls for use of very large or very small numbers. How are fractions, decimals and percents related? Any rational number can be represented in fraction, decimal and percent form.

Skills
1. Mathematics Assessment Project:
• A02:100 People - Apprentice - In this task, you are asked to estimate the real numbers, given that there are approximately seven billion people in the world.
• A03:A Million Dollars - Apprentice - In this task, you will figure out questions such as: How much does a million Dollars in Dollar bills weigh? How many burgers can you buy for a million Dollars?

Explore Learning
1. Comparing and Ordering Decimals: Use grids to model decimal numbers and compare them graphically. Then compare the numbers on a number line.
2. Comparing and Ordering Fractions: Use area models to compare and order fractions. Also see a visual representation of the least common denominator of two fractions. With the visual representation of the LCD, this Gizmo can be an introduction to adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators.
3. Comparing and Ordering Rational Numbers: Compare and order two rational numbers using an area model.
4. Fraction Garden (Comparing Fractions): Plant flowers in two gardens to help develop fraction sense. The two gardens act as number lines, from 0 to 1. Use the flowers in the gardens to compare fractions and to explore equivalent fractions. Chalk marks can be drawn to divide the garden into equal sections.
5. Ordering Percents, Fractions and Decimals: Compare and order numbers represented as percents, fractions, and decimals using area grids and a number line.
6. Ordering Percents, Fractions and Decimals Greater Than 1: Compare and order numbers greater than 1 using area grids and a number line. Examine the numbers represented as percents, improper fractions, and decimals.
7. Percents and Proportions: Find a part from the percent and whole, a percent from the part and whole, or a whole from the part and percent using a graphic model.
