Lesson 2-5: Proving Lines Parallel

Interactive Applet

Video Lecture

Objective:

SOL G.2 a,b: The student will use the relationships between angles formed by two lines cut by a transversal to (a) determine if two lines are parallel; (b) verify the parallelism, using algebraic and coordinate methods as well as deductive proofs.

  1. In the figure on the left, Segment 1 is parallel to Segment 2.

  2. Drag point T and R to the left side of the vertical line, then determine the relationship between them and S.

  3. Drag point T and R to the right side of the vertical line, then determine the relationship between them and S.

  1. What is the geometric reason for these relationships?

  2. Hint: You made need to draw a line to see the reason. Use the Refresh Button of your Browser to see the original sketch.
