How do you construct an angle bisector?

Objective

6.16 The student will construct the perpendicular bisector of a line segment and an angle bisector.

 Directions Close
  1. Move the Points A, B, and C. How does the construction change?
  2. What happens when the ∠ABC is larger than 180°? You can Click on the browser's Refresh button to reset the construction.
  3. See the written step-by-step instructions below.
  4. Make this construction using a Compass and Straight Edge.
  5. Make this construction using a software program.
 Directions 2 Close
    Given an ∠ABC, bisect it.
  • Choose a convenient radius. Place the center point on B and draw an arc intersecting both rays - BA and BC.
  • You need not change the radius. Place the center point at the arcs intersection on BA and draw another arc in the interior of the angle. Repeat for ray BC.
  • Mark the point of the arcs intersection within the ∠D.
  • Align the straight edge with point B and point D. Draw a line connecting them.
  • Line BD now bisects ∠ABC.
