Solving equations with Algebra Tiles

An equation is like a scale balance. Use these tiles represent to the following values or variables:
= +1    = −1    = x     and this pair represents = 0

Represent the equation x + 2 = 5 with tiles.

  1. Using the "Zero Pair", isolate the variable on one side of the equation by creating "zero pairs".
Remeber to keep the scale balanced.
  2. Write the resulting equation. x + 2 −2 = 5 −2.
Represent the final result with tiles.
  3. Write the solution as an equation. x = 3.

When you have determined a value for the variable, you have solved the equation.
