Hands-On Activities

  • This well-tried activity has been responsible for many personal hours of interest and frustration. The idea is to express as many numbers as you can from 1 to 30 using exactly four 4s and any combination of: +, -, ×, ÷ or ( ).
    For example: 1 = (4+4)*(4+4)
    15 = 44*4+4 -- Notice that 44 counts as two fours.
    Working with a partner, find as many of these expressions as you can. Remember, your answers must follow the order of operations. Show all work on a separate sheet of paper to be turn in one answer sheet per pair. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!

Lesson 1-1: Numerical Expressions

This section covers the order in which operations are carried out to evaluate numerical expressions.

If more than one operation in a calculation has the same precedence, the operations are carried out from left-to-right. In the example below, you divide then multiply and finally add.

Evaluate the expression, when x is -3, 6, 9 or -5.

Check your work by entering a value for (x) below. The applet will show the step-by-step process of evaulating the expression.
