2010 Math Olympics Recap!

Have you ever thought about competing against other middle school math classes to check out your math understanding and comprehension? You have? Well, great! You are in the right place! During the 2010 Winter Olympics, there will be math questions related to 17 different Olympic topics. For each event, a link provides related background information and videos. You will use this information and take a short quiz. All of your teammates' scores will be averaged together and submitted to the judges by your teacher. Gold, silver, and bronze medals will be given out to the highest performing teams (classes) of each event. By the end of the Olympic Games, you will learn something about the Olympics and hopefully learn something about math! The medal count will be shown on the Medal links above for bragging rights. The top teams get prizes, goodies, or a lifetime supply of oxygen.

Are you still up for the challenge? Here is what you need to do to get started. Your teacher will submit the following information to the International Henrico Olympic Committee (IHOC) for approval:

Team Name and Class Period:
School Name:
Division (6th / 7th / 8th / High School):
Teacher Name:
School District:
Number of participants on team:
Flag (optional):

Once your team has been approved and the mathletes selected for your team, you are ready to compete!

Teacher information: Competing in every (or any) math competition is not mandatory. A list of events with their corresponding dates can be found on the Schedule link above. Previewing the "Olympic Challenge" and the "Medal Questions" for an event will help you decide whether it is appropriate for your students. Obviously, the more events you enter, the better chance you have of having the most medals overall! Teams may compete in both the "Olympic Challenge" and the "Medal Questions" if they choose. Note: Your team(s) should consist of at least 10 people unless you have a very small class.

You can use these resources four different ways:
    1. Compete against other classes by completing the "Olympic Challenge" multiple choice problem.
    2. Compete against other classes by completing all three of the "Medal Questions".
    3. Supplement your lesson plans as you see fit.
    4. Close your browser window and pretend like you never saw these materials.

There will be deadlines for each of the events and you will be responsible for submitting the class average rounded to the nearest hundredth to me via a Google Document form. Results submitted after the deadline will not count as the medals will be posted after each event.

If you are interested in registering your team(s) and have not received an email about how to do so, please contact me (Skip Tyler) at estyler@henrico.k12.va.us. I will send you a link to the registration page. Good luck in advance and have fun competing for the gold!
