Welcome

There are many reasons why the teaching of the fine arts is a great way for students to learn.  While engaging in art, students listen, watch, analyze, problem-solve, critique, formulate questions, use their fine and large motor skills, all while developing their creativity and imagination!  Opportunities in art class also promote collaboration.   The benefits of a fine arts education are endless and exciting!

Students at Rivers Edge Elementary have art class once a week.  Kindergarten classes are thirty minutes long and grades one through five have art for forty minutes.  The lessons provided are guided by the Virginia State Standards and Objectives for Art which are geared towards each grade level.  This year, we are very pleased and excited to have Mrs. Karen Siler here to teach art in Mrs. Ciucci’s and Mrs. Wallen’s Kindergarten classes.

Throughout the year, a wide variety of media are used in each grade level to promote a progression of skill and development.  Many lessons are related to the same subjects in the classroom curriculum to reinforce concepts and make connections.  Creativity and experimentation are always encouraged.

If you ever have any questions or would like to visit your child’s art class, you may contact the school or reach me at elpennin@henrico.k12.va.us.  I will be happy to welcome you.
