Patrick Henry was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses when Virginia was still a British colony. He believed that England was not respecting the colonist’s rights because they were being taxed without having representatives in the English government.  In a speech to the House of Burgesses meeting at St. John’s Church in Richmond he said his famous words, “Give me liberty or give me death!” This inspired many Patriots to take up arms against the British. 1
