Father of our country

George Washington was the first president of the United States.  He is called the “Father of our Country.”1  Born in Virginia, he started out as a farmer, but then became a brave leader of soldiers 2 in our fight for freedom from England.3  After the U.S. won its independence, he helped establish the new nation with a republican form of government. 4  Washington used his military experience as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army to lead the United States as its first presdient. 5  Today, the U.S. president is still the commander-in-chief of the armed forces.
