MENINGITIS

Meningitis is a bacterial or non-bacterial infection that causes inflammation (redness, swelling, pain, tenderness, heat, and disturbed function of an area of the body) membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. Meningitis is a word you might hear on the news. That's because there are sometimes outbreaks of meningitis at schools or colleges — and it can be a serious illness. Meningitis gets attention because it not only makes a person feel sick, it can have lasting effects on a person's ability to think and learn. But many people recover from the infection without permanent damage. And the illness is so rare, you may never know anyone who gets it. But many people get better after they have meningitis and there are ways to keep from getting sick from it.

About Me

Doctors prescribe antibiotics for meningitis ; the type will vary depending on the infecting organism. Antibiotics are not effective FOR all different meningitis too.

Treatment of secondary symptoms including brain swelling, shock, and seizures will require other medications. Some people may need to stay in the hospital, depending on the severity of the illness and the treatment needed.
