Lesson 7 - Publishing an Internet
Test or Study Guide
Assignment: Create and publish
a test for your students
Time: 1 hour |
Internet Testing
ExamView lets you easily create Internet tests and study
guides. Build a test using the question selection methods you already
know how to use. Then, simply choose the Publish Internet Test option.
You must save the test/study guide to your hard drive, upload
the files to your website or virtual share folder, and then provide access
to your students. Refer to the following sections for step-by-step instructions.
To save an Internet test/study
guide to your hard drive:
- Build a test/study guide just as you would create a test to be printed.
- Select the questions you want to include on the test/study guide.
- Make any changes, add new questions, or change the formatting
as desired.
- Then, use the Save command to save the test file
to disk.
- Click
or
choose the Publish Internet Test option from the File
menu.
- Name the test.
- Select the option to save the test files to your local hard drive,
and then click the Next button.
- Choose whether you want to publish a test or a study guide. At this
time, your best option is to choose a study guide. See below for reasons.
- If you choose to publish a test, you must specify
an email address. When students submit a completed test, the browser
sends the results to you via their email (this is a problem if they
take the test at school or on a computer without email capabilities).
If you prefer, you can allow students to see their results. An Internet
test may include any or all of the question types, however, only
the objective questions (e.g., Multiple Choice, True/False, Yes/No,
Completion, Modified True/False, Matching, and Numeric Response)
are automatically graded. You must manually score open-ended questions
(e.g., Short Answer, Essay, Case, and Other).
- If you choose to publish a study guide, you
can decide whether or not to display notes (or hints) and a reference
for your students. Using the study guide mode, students can check
their own work. ExamView scores each objective question and shows
which responses were correct and which were wrong.
- Review the summary information.
- Click the Save button to save the test/study guide.
- When you choose to save an Internet test to your hard drive,
ExamView creates an HTML file and an accompanying folder with all
of the necessary image files. This makes it easier for you to post
the files to a web server. If, for example, you save your test as
chapter1, the software will create a file called chapter1.htm and
a folder called chapter1_files with the required image files. (See
the illustration below.)
- Post the test/study guide to your web page server or virtual share
to make it available to your students.
- Once you post a test, you should verify that students can access it.
You may also want to try the "Grade & Submit" feature
for tests to make sure that the results are emailed to the correct address.
Notes:
The test generator program automatically replaces any
spaces in file names with underscores ( _ ).
When you create a test, ExamView encrypts the
answer information so that students cannot see the answers in
the HTML page source. While this does help to prevent cheating,
there is no foolproof method in an unsupervised environment.

- Finally, put your test/study guide and your test bank in a folder
named lastname_examview. You will need to log into
the staff development server as a guest (Click
here for instructions) and drop your folder into my staff development
folder dropbox. If you are doing this at school, you must be connected
via your ethernet cable. The path to the dropbox is "Online Course
| tyleres | Public | Dropbox". You will not be able to open the
dropbox and will get a message when you drop your folder. This is okay!
Once complete, send me an email and I will check it an let you know
everything is completed. After you receive my email, log into Ero and
complete the course evaluation so that you can get paid!
