Style #1: Beard

Saturday, January 27, 2007
I decided to be lazy and not shave in the morning. As the weekend went on, I made the decision to let my beard grow out. I was particularly interested in seeing just how much gray hair was coming into my beard. After a two week growth period, I decided that I had enough of the facial hair and decided to have a little fun with my experiment. Because my mother dropped me on my head when I was a baby, I thought it would be interesting to let my students determine the stages of my "facial hair removal" and document it for the world to see! So, here is my journal entry entitled "The Many Faces of Mr. Tyler".

Update: March 5, 2010 - Kevin Youkilis thinks I had a great idea!

I utilized a PowerPoint presentation along with student responders (also known as "clickers") to let my students determine what they wanted me to do with my beard. Notice that I am using technology to further advance the education of my students! Here's what they got to choose!

I polled all of my classes, totalled up their selections, and kept the results secret. I was all set to shave Monday night when I remembered that I had an appointment after school on Tuesday. I decided to wait until after the appointment to shave to prevent anyone thinking that I did this on purpose.

Here's what I looked like after two weeks of growth...

I am smiling because I can't wait to get rid of the scruffy and scratchy feeling.
Plus, I haven't kissed my wife in two weeks - she's not a big fan of the beard thing...

Editors note:

I was amazed at how quickly my beard has come in. Also, I have a LOT of gray coming in on my beard. It is just a matter of time before it takes over and begins to spread to my head like the plague. It's a good thing I really don't care about gray hairs because I can't afford applying Grecian Formula at my age...

I'm sure that you are now curious as to what the students chose. Well, if you hadn't figured it out yet, it had to be something unorthodox if I was worried about somebody seeing me in public. It was actually a pretty close race with the winning selection determined by my first period class (all but 3 voted for this particular shave).
