Nine Henrico County Public Schools teachers achieved National Board Certification this school year, an increase from five teachers last year. The nine teachers are Janet Givens from Echo Lake Elementary, Christie Hall and Maripat Hyatt from Ward Elementary, Teresa Hardy-Ward and Christine Stallings from Davis Elementary, Deborah Kleinschmit from Brookland Middle, Kristi Trevillian and Amy Whitson from Ridge Elementary, and Skip Tyler Jr. from Varina High. Henrico Superintendent Fred S. Morton IV expressed his congratulations. “Earning National Board Certification is a momentous achievement these teachers should be extremely satisfied in accomplishing. They worked long hours to complete this goal and should be commended,” Morton said. |

Founded 17 years ago, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan and non-governmental organization dedicated to advancing the quality of teaching and learning. A voluntary process established by NBPTS, certification is achieved through a rigorous performance-based assessment that takes between one and three years to complete. It measures what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do. The process requires an additional 200 to 400 hours of preparation beyond the normal school day. Teachers develop a school-site portfolio including student work samples, video clips of lessons and reflective commentaries about their use of learning strategies. |
