First Friday was created, and is administered by, Christina Newton. The mission of the program is to provide a free cultural activity to citizens and visitors of Richmond, Virginia in hopes of creating awareness and appreciation of the participating cultural institutions in the Historic Broad Street District and Downtown Richmond. The City of Richmond's plans for the development of the Downtown area signaled the opportunity for the Richmond arts community to contribute to the rejuvenation of the City's cultural appeal. The program lays the foundation of making Historic Broad Street an "Arts District."
