Patriot spy
James Armistead Lafayette was a slave from Virginia. He volunteered to join the continental Army during the Revolutionary War. He acted like a slave in the British camp, but he was really a spy and shared their secret plans with the Patriots. The information he provided helped the Americans win the war at Yorktown. Later he was given his freedom and became a farmer in Virginia.1
